Welcome fans to tonight's Big Ten home opene featuring the Wisconsin Badgers (10-2, 0-1) and No. 16 Michigan State (9-3, 0-1). I am your home blogging host, Tam Flarup. I was the athletics media relations contact for the UW team for over 30 years, but am now the Director of the Athletic Web site, UWBadgers.com.

Both teams have suffered one loss in conference action way back on Dec. 6. UW led then-No. 3 Ohio State by two at the half in Columbus before losing 70-55. MSU led Indiana most of the game before losing 68-63 in East Lansing.

Wisconsin wrapped up the non-conference season with a 10-1 record, equaling its non-conference record of a year ago. The 10-1 mark is the second-best ever for the Badgers, trailing only an 11-1 non-conference mark from the 1997-98 season.

UW was last in action on Dec. 15 with a win over Robert Morris, then broke for finals and the holidays. MSU's last game was Dec. 21, a hard-fought win over St. Bonaventure.

In playing MSU today, UW faces the team predicted to finish second behind the Buckeyes in the preseason polls. Michigan State has advanced to the NCAA tournament six times in the past seven years, last year losing in the sweet 16 after beating Duke.

However, the last two times the two teams met, the Badgers won. UW spoiled the Spartans' hopes of winning the Big Ten title with a 54-51 victory late in the 2009 regular season, and then upset them 56-50 in the Big Ten tournament.

Monday December 28, 2009 6:07

The 16th-ranked Spartans feature the tallest player in the Big Ten in 6-9 senior Alyssa DeHaan. She is tied for third in NCAA history in blocked shots with 446 and is just 35 away from breaking the record held by Sandora Irvin of TCU. It's hard to believe she ranks SECOND in the Big Ten in blocks per game with 3.67. Northwestern's Amy Jaeschke is first with 3.92 per game.

I expect a good crowd tonight since its holiday break in Madison and kids don't have school tomorrow. Already looking like a lot of people took advantage of the Five for $5 ticket promotion. Therewon't be a band, though. They are in Orlando with the UW football team appearing in the Champs Sports Bowl Dec. 29.

Monday December 28, 2009 6:46
6:49
I have seen Alyssa DeHaan many times on the court or at the Big Ten media day, and believe me she is all of 6-9. Pretty impressive especially since she is also a good face the basket shooter, probably her preferred position since she is so thin. She is MSU's leading scorer at 13.0 points per game, and contributes 6.8 rebounds as well.
Monday December 28, 2009 6:49
6:55
3:30 minutes away from national anthem. looks like the starters entered for Wisconsin are the usual: Tara Steinbauer and Lin Zastrow at forward, guards Rae LIn D'Alie, Teah Gant and Alyssa Karel.

MSU: forwards Aisha Jefferson and Lykendra Johnson, center Alyssa DeHaan, and guards Cetera Washington and Brittney Thomas

Lisa Stone had her 100th career victory at Wisconsin Dec. 13 vs. SIU-Edwardsville. She is 101-94 (.518) in her seventh season at UW. She joins Jane Albright and Edwina Qualls as the only UW coaches to go over the century mark.

WE are about to tip off.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:03
7:04
DeHaan hits a 10 foot baseline jumper and MSU is on the board first. But Tara gets one underneath and we are tied at 2 each.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:04
7:06
MSU opened in a zone defense. UW used the whole clock but Alyssa Karel connected its 4-2 Badgers. Whoops, Johnson hit a 3 and MSU leads 5-4 with 18:02 left.

Jolene stopped in before the game. Yes, she and her whole family are here. She leaves tomorrow for France. This is her second season and she loves it. Plays exclusively on the perimeter. Her team is in fourth place of 14 teams.

Great defensive stance by UW denies the Spartans, but they can't convert on the other end.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:07
7:08
Bucky has a seat right next to me. Fortunately, he doesnt' talk much so I won't be bothered. BTW, Jolene will be Mike Hellers guest at the half on WTSO radio 1070 in Madison if you want to tune in.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:08
7:10
Third great defensive stance by Badgers but they lose it at the other end. MSU takes the turnover and returns the favor on their end. It's Spartans leading 5-4 at the first media timeout (15:56). Each team has 3 TO's each.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:10
7:11
Badgers are just 2-3 from the floor for 67 percent, and MSU is 2-of-4. Not a lot of shots with all the turnovers and UW's great defense.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:11
7:13
Lykendra Johnson hits on a baseline drive but missed the 'and one' off the Teah Gant foul. Karel converts two free throws on the other end and its 7-6 MSU.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:13
7:14
The Badgers pack defense is designed to keep MSU out of the lane and so far doing pretty well. Karel got caught in the lane with no where to go, turnover No. 4
Monday December 28, 2009 7:14
7:15
Karel connects on a 3 from the corner giving UW its second lead 9-7
Monday December 28, 2009 7:15
7:16
Zastrow has come to play defense tonijght. Earlier she swatted away a pass inside and now stood her ground on Aitch for MSU's sixth turnover.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:16
7:18
Rae Lin hits a step back 3 and UW leads 11-7 with 12:27 left. Freshman Taylor Wurtz is in the game as the first person off the bench.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:18
7:20
Rae draws the foul on a wild drive and she will shoot when we return from the second media timeout. UW leads 11-9 with 11:07 left in the first.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:20
7:22
The Badgers have played a tough schedule. Wisconsin ranks 10th in RPI according to RealTimeRPI.com. The Badgers are the top Big Ten school in the rankings. UW is also 11th in strength of schedule.

Monday December 28, 2009 7:22
7:23
Rae made one of two free throws but UW getst the ball back. MSU back to a man-to-man and UW turns it over.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:23
7:24
Some wild plays right now. Rae Lin takes MSU turnover No. 8 and throws it up expecting a foul. MSU rebounds and UW swarms Alyssa DeHaan with Lin on the lane side and Rae Lin the grip of the double team tying her up. TO No. 9 for MSU.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:24
7:26
Either this Badger defense is really good, or MSU is really careless. TO No. 10 on a bad pass to DeHaan. Taylor Wurth for 3 and UW leads 15-9.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:26
7:28
Karel hits her 9th point. MSU Washington hit earlier and Rae Lin just gets her third steal but misses the layup. Karel is fouled on the follow and will go to the line when we return from the media timeout. UW leads 17-11 with 7:56 remaining.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:28
7:29
The scoreboard just showed Jolene Anderson in the house, and the crowd applauded loudly. I will try and get a photo of her during her interview at the half to put on the blog.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:29
7:32
Karel gets to double figures with two free throws, the 11th time in 13 games this year and fourth in a row. UW elads 19-11, but throws it away on its next possession. UW now has 8 TOs
Monday December 28, 2009 7:32

Monday December 28, 2009 7:34

Badgers have settled for outside jump shots the last two times down. Karel makes agreat play stealing the ball and Rae Lin tips it to Anya Covington for the layin AND a FOUL on DeHaan, her first. That's significant because when DeHaan is in foul trouble, MSU doesn't play well. Timeout MSU.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:35
7:36
DeHaan is 1-of-2 and has only 2 points. The Badgers have swarmed her all nijght. Anya misses the free throw but gets another with an MSU lane violation. She mnakes this one UW leads 22-13 with 5:03 left.

We haven't seen Jade Davis yet or Jamie Russell but Anya Covington, Taylor Wurtz and Ashley Thomas have all had good minutes. DeHaan has scored twice now with no answer by UW ...whoops Lin gets her first bucket and its UW 24-17.
Monday December 28, 2009 7:40
7:42
Anya hits for her fifth point. She's having a great game. DeHaan hits from the top of the key. She is very versatile. Her third straight bucket and she is 3-of-3 in the last five minutes. Last media timeout and UW leads 26-19 with 1:40 left.

Rae Lin was exhorting her troops as they batted another MSU pass out. MSU turns it over and Lisa calls timeout before the Spartans can tie up Thomas on the grab. UW ball with 57 seconds left. Must go the length of the court.

Monday December 28, 2009 8:11 ern
8:13
They seem to understand the defensive scheme better this year and have really hung their hats on that. With that identity, they can hang with people. But they also needed an offensive identity, and they are closer to having that this year. There are more contributors than just Alyssa Karel. When Lin gets going, she could really be a force. You also have to hold serve on the home court, so this game is going to be important and a good indicator.

They have been very disruptive with hands in passing lanes. Lots of deflections. No clean passes to the post. Lauren Aitch hasn't scored and she is usually good for 9 points a game. They have only shot 16 percent (1-7) from downtown so we are just packing in the lane. DeHaan got going at the end of the first half, but hasn't had many touches this half. She is just 4-7 with 9 points.
Monday December 28, 2009 8:26
8:27
Karel drives baseline and is rewarded with 2 free throws. Misses the first. She has 16 points to lead ALL scores. No one else has double figures on either team.

Certainly something to use going forward. Some nice smiles out there as the team huddles at center court and waves to the crowd. Nice applause back.
