A little note about Grambling's crazy travel to get here.
They left campus at 7 am yesterday morning and didn't arrive in Madison until 11:15 p.m. last night. Yikes.

They had a two-hour delay in Shreveport for mechanical problems with their plan. That caused them to miss their connecting flight in Dallas. The team had to take separate flights to Chicago... then bus to Madison. We'll see what kind of energy they have today.

Yeah... GSU is a little under-sized... we'll see.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:01
12:01
Keaton wins the tip and Bucky will set up the offense with Hughes.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:01
12:02
GSU is in man-to-man defense to start... Hughes gets called for an offensive foul on a clear-out on the first possession.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:02
12:02
Bucky had only 5 turnovers vs. Duke, but opens today with one.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:02
12:02
Akepele misses a baby hook in low and UW clears.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:02
12:03
At the other end, Leuer catches quickly and scores... and one! Foul on Fuertado.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:03
12:03
Leuer makes good on the 3-point play and UW leads 3-0 early.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:03
12:04
Fuertado catches his own miss (off the side of the backboard) and puts in the put-back. Nice physical play vs. Leuer.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:04
12:04
Now Leuer picks up an offensive foul... that's two turnovers in three trips. A little sloppy opening.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:04
12:05
Hughes nearly, gets the steal, but UW can't come up with it.
Taylor enters the game with the ball heading OB. He replaces Leuer and the Badgers go small.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:05
12:05
Grambling leads 4-3 after an inside lay-in by Akepele.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:05
12:06
A little nervous encouragement from the crowd. Again the intensity just doesn't compare to Wednesday night. Hard to get hyped.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:06
12:07
Evans replaces Jarmusz and J-Bo drains a triple from the wing. J-Bo was 0-6 from deep vs. Duke, nice to get him goin.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:07
12:07
GSU misses and Taylor rims in a jumper. 8-4 now.
GSU answers with an Akepele bucket.

Hughes misses a drive and Evans gets blocked on the put-back. GSU brings it down the floor down just two.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:08

Evans looks down low to Hughes... he gets fouled and will shoot two after the timeout.

UW shooting 50% (3-6)
GSU shooting 37.5% (3-8)
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:10
12:11
I was wrong on the earlier statement that UW has two turnovers, the Leuer foul was an over the back... not offensive.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:11
12:11
The Kohl Center is starting to fill-in a little now. The student section still look like the first quarter of a football game though.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:11
12:12
Pop swishes both FTs. He's 21-of-28 at the line this year.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:12
12:12
GSU turns it over and Taylor throws an alley-oop to Evans... SLAM! Love the athleticism that Evans brings. That was fun.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:12
12:12
GSU misses and J-Bo makes it hurt with another 3 from the same spot on the floor. He has a quick 6 points.

GSU gets whistled for traveling as Wilson replaces Hughes. Rob didn't get in vs. Duke, but sees early action today.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:13
12:13
Let's see how aggressive he plays.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:13
12:13
Berggren also enters the game and he gets a quick hoop on a pass from Taylor. Should be lots of playing time for the youngsters today.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:13
12:14
Berggren catches in the low block from J-Bo... turns and double-clutches on the shot. He misses, but is fouled.

[Comment From dandan: ]
why has wilson seen limited playing time the last few games?
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:14 dan
12:14
That's a good question.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:14
12:15
I would say a big reason is that Bo Ryan doesn't like to play 10 guys in a game very often. He usually uses 8 or 9-man rotation. With Evans and even Bruesewitz playing well, Rob has been odd man out a little.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:15
12:15
Berg hits one of two FTs.
GSU misses and Taylor drives the lane and scores off the window.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:15
12:16
Taylor can penetrate a little more than people think... he's a great compliment to Hughes.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:16
12:16
Grambling's Qualls knocks down a three to cut the lead to 20-9.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:16
12:16
Bruiser works in the post for Bucky, can't get the turn-around to fall and then fouls on the rebound. Freshman play perhaps?
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:16
12:17
UW brings the two bigs back in the game (Jon and Keaton).
Grambling's Qualls hits another 3... this time a DEEP 3 with 2 seconds on the shot clock. A little 6-0 run for the Tigers.

Qualls has 6 points for GSU, who is shooting 38.5%.

[Comment From BKBK: ]
Duke was a big team. Wilson matches up well with small wings, but Singler would've given him problem. WIlson will get his chances this season . . . Marquette comes to mind.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:20 BK
12:20
I definitely agree... Bo Ryan is a master at using his players to match-up with other teams. We'll see more of Wilson in games this year.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:20
12:21
Taylor misses a jumper.
One lonely fan has the Oooooooooooo chant going during GSU's possession.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:21
12:22
GSU misses and Tim Jarmusz knocks down a jumper for Bucky. His first points.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:22
12:22
Qualls tries another DEEEEP three at the end of the shot clock, this time its way off.
Wilson can't get the bucket in low at the other end.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:22
12:23
Leuer steals it back... leaves for Taylor who pushes in transition to Wilson for a lay-up. UW beat GSU down the court that time.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:23
12:23
Taylor has four assists already today. He's second in the Big Ten coming into today in assist-to-turnover ratio. He's helping his case today, that's for sure.

Hughes misses a triple from the corner and GSU comes back.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:30

A loose ball and J-Bo hits the deck and tries to wrestle it away. It is a jumpball and GSU keeps it.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:31
12:32
Fuertado with a nice take and lefty scoop under Leuer... 30-18 now UW leads.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:32
12:32
J-Bo jumps it down to Taylor in the post and he can't get the turn-around to fall but he's fouled. Hmmm... Taylor working in the post. Now that's the swing offense.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:32
12:32
We don't see a lot of Hughes down there, but Taylor is strong and he could make a good living down there if he perfects his craft.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:32

Taylor hits one of two FTs... that's another part of his game that he's working on.

J-Bo leaves his feet but finds Hughes for two off the glass.

A GSU drive and Keaton is late rotating over and gets called for the block call. Qualls will shoot two. At 5-foot-7, he looks small in amongst the bigs.
He hits both FTs and GSU sets up a press.
Saturday December 5, 2009 12:34

I've only seen the Duke game, but follow the team closely from the west coast. I get the idea that the underclassman are pushing the upperclassman to play with more grit and fire. Specifically, Evans, Taylor and Bruiser are inspiring Nank and Leuer. What do those at the games think?

I would add that anyone complaining about recruiting is not watching how the underclassman play. Taylor is not being asked to do what Trevon did as a soph, but he is ready. Wilson is going to be good too, on par with JBo next year. They are both playing the roles that Hughes and JBo played as freshmen - the 3rd and 4th guards in the rotation.

For those of you concerned about the recruiting, I wouldn't really worry about it. You can never really tell how players are going to be. But what you can bet on is players will get better under Bo Ryan. Us Badger fans are going to love Josh Gasser, you can bank on that.
