Breaking down all the rankings

Four different wrestling publications released their updated rankings Tuesday, and the Wisconsin wrestling team is ranked in a different spot depending on which publication you look at.  After going 0-2 last weekend in Oregon, the Badgers have dropped in all three team polls, but in some more than others.

We'll try to break it down for you:

InterMat Poll
This week: No. 22
Last week: No. 12

Ranked Wrestlers: Tyler Graff (No. 9 at 133 lbs.), Kyle Ruschell (No. 2 at 149 lbs.), Andrew Howe (No. 3 at 165 lbs.), Trevor Brandvold (No. 6 at 197 lbs.)

More on the rankings: Graff was the only Badger wrestler to move in this poll as he jumped up a spot from No. 10 to No. 9. He went 1-1 against two ranked opponents last weekend, which most likely helped him move up a bit in the very tough 133-pound weight class.

The InterMat individual rankings are the ones that will be used by UWBadgers.com throughout the season when describing individual wrestlers.

NWCA/USA Today Division I Team Coaches Poll
This week: T-17th
Last week: No. 13

Ranked Wrestlers: None. NWCA Coaches Poll only ranks the top-25 teams.

More on the ranking: Wisconsin is tied with Edinboro at No. 17. Edinboro has a 2-1 record so far in dual action. The NWCA poll is made up of one coach from each conference and this is the poll that is used by UWBadgers.com when listing team rankings throughout the season.

WIN Magazine Division I Tournament Power Index
This week: No. 13
Last poll: T-11th

Ranked wrestlers: Tyler Graff (No. 18 at 133 lbs.), Kyle Ruschell (No. 2 at 149 lbs.), Andrew Howe (No. 3 at 165 lbs.)

More on the rankings: WIN Magazine's rankings are a little bit different than the other two. This ranking is more of a tournament ranking, as opposed to a dual ranking like the other two polls. According to WIN:

"The Tournament Power Index (TPI) is compiled by awarding points to each team for the ranked wrestlers listed in WIN's current individual rankings. Teams are awarded points based on how many potential All-Americans they could have and get advancement points for wrestlers ranked No. 9-20. The order of teams in the TPI vary greatly from dual meet rankings, as some teams have a number of highly-ranked individuals but may have holes in their dual meet line-up."

Graff was not ranked by WIN in the initial poll and now enters the rankings at No. 18 for 133 lbs. WIN appears to only rank wrestlers that have competed this season, which is why Trevor Brandvold is not amongst the group at 197 lbs.

Amateur Wrestling News
