Today's game has some special meaning for a couple coaches. Cleveland Coach Kate Peterson Abiad is a Stevens Point, Wis,. native and former assistant coach for WIsconsin under Jane Albright. Current UW assistant coach Oties Epps was Abiad's assistant at Cleveland State prior to coming to UW two years ago.

CSU was picked to finish second in the Horizon League in preseason rankings and is coming off two-straight 19-win seasons. Senior Kailey Klein is the Horizon league preseason player of the year.
Sunday November 22, 2009 1:35
1:37
This is the second straight Horizon league team for UW who beat UW-Milwaukee 64-55 last Thursday. CSU hit a 3=pointer to open the scoring and Rae Lin D'Alie just hit a layin from Tara on a fast break so both teams are on the board 2-3 with 18:02 left in the first.

WIsconsin has a new offense this year, four-out one in motion offense well-suited to our nimble guard play. The Badgers are averaging 10 points more that last year's 56.6 points a game so far this year. Tara Steinbauer and Rae Lin D'Alie are leading the team with 12.5 points per game.
Sunday November 22, 2009 1:40
1:41
The Badgers are showing their ability to run the floor and drive the lane taking an 8-7 lead into the first media timeout. Steinbauer leads with four points.
Sunday November 22, 2009 1:41
1:46
Wisconsin leads this series 5-1 with the most recent victory the 2007 season opener at Cleveland State, 82-62. CSU is pretty athletic but not very tall. Not one starter is taller than 5-11. They do have a 6-3 sophomre and a 6-1 freshman who can come off the bench. The Badgers start two six-footers in 6-4 Lin Zastrow and 6-1 Tara Steinbauer, and have a couple more in reserve.
Sunday November 22, 2009 1:46
1:48
VIkings have pushed ahead 17-12 as LIn Zastrow is whistled for her second foul and takes a seat with 13:01 left in the game.

CSU shows zone and Gant penetrates but misses the shot. CSU converts to lead 19-12 and Coach Lisa Stone takes a timeout with 12:09 left in the first.
Sunday November 22, 2009 1:49
1:51
Kailey Klein is leading all scores with 8 points. ALyssa Karel has six for the Badgers. Gant tries to penetrate again but misses and no foul. She is the only one figuring out the zone right now. Zone buster Jade Davis is at the scorer's table for Wisconsin. She had the best 3-point percentage on the team last year hitting over 50 percent. CSU leads 19-12 at second media timeout (11:28).
Sunday November 22, 2009 1:51
1:53
There is no band today. The Badger band is performing at the halftime of today's Green Bay football game. So we are being treated to some really interesting musical selections over the speaker system.
Sunday November 22, 2009 1:53
1:57
Freshman Taylor Wurtz is in. At 6-0, she is a lot taller and stronger looking than I expected a freshman to be. She just scored down low on a feed from Karel. She is also a capable 3-point shooter. UW fouls are mounting as CSU hits two free throws to lead 22-14 with 10:18 left.
Sunday November 22, 2009 1:57
2:00
CSU takes its largest lead of the game 24-14, but Steinbauer stops UW's scoring drought. Davis his a 3-pointer and UW draws within 26-19 with 8 minutes left.
Sunday November 22, 2009 2:00
2:03
At the third media timeout, CSU leads 28-19. Karel and Steinbauer both have six points to lead UW. Karel had a hard time scoring at UW-Milwaukee but Stenbauer (15) and D'Alie (14) stepped up. Taylor Wurtz also had a career best 11 points. Still waiting to see who is going to step up today.
Sunday November 22, 2009 2:03
2:04
It's a fairly decent crowd here on this Sunday afternoon considering its a beautiful 55 degree November afternoon in Madison. We have had such a mild November. Lot's of people were putting up outdoor holiday decorations as I drove int today.
Sunday November 22, 2009 2:04
2:07
Sophomore Jamie Russel just impressed with a driving lane runner and a rebound. She may get more playing time this year. Karel scores to make it the closest it has been for awhile, 29-23 with 5:13 left.
Sunday November 22, 2009 2:07
2:08
Russel just hit another lane jumjper. She's figured out the CSU defense. UW was outrebounding the smaller Vikings earlier in the game, but trails 12-10 in that category of late. UW was on a 6-0 run before a foul shot puts CSU up 30-25 with 4:40 left.
Sunday November 22, 2009 2:08
2:11
Alyssa Karel is playing some 'D' on her player deflecting a pass picked up by Steinbauer. But the Badgers trail 33-25 at the last media timeout before the half (3:31). CSU is hitting 63.2 percent from the floorand outrebounding UW 13-10. UW is hitting a not so bad 46 percent. Karel laeds with 8 points. Klein has 14 for CSU.
Sunday November 22, 2009 2:11
2:13

Rae Rae missed an open 3 and CSU hits theres. Largest lead of the game 36-25. Whoops make that 38-25 with 2 minutes elft.

Sunday November 22, 2009 2:13
2:14
Badger misses and CSU conversions have given CSU the momentum leading 40-25 forcing Lisa to call timeout with 1:45 left. Badgers need to regroup.
Sunday November 22, 2009 2:14
2:18
Russel just hit a 3-pointer 27 secondes left and has seven points. That was the first field goal by UW since a lane jumper by her at 4:58. Long drought. I think she should start the second half. She has a ton of energy.

HALFTIME SCORE: CSU 40, UW 28

Badgers use same starters as first half, but expect Jamie Russell to be one of the first players off the bench. Slow start for both teams this half. CSU scored once and Rae Lin hits a wing jumper and one. She misses and its CSU 43, UW 32 with 17:20 left.

Lin Zastrow just hit her first bucket of the game after sitting 13 minutes of the first half in foul trouble. We need her on the floor. She just scored again and UW is on a 6-0 run. CSU 45, UW 39. Closest it's been since 4:45 left in the first.

CSU has dropped its field goal percentage a bit to 56.7 percnet since hitting 62.5 percent in the first half. UW has edged ahead of the Vikings in the rebounding battle 18-17. That must have been a point of emphasis at the half.
Sunday November 22, 2009 2:45
2:47
Lin is showing her versatility driving to the basket. At 6-4 and active inside or able to steph outside and hit the 3, she is a defensive nightmare for CSU. She hits again for 7 points as UW closes to 45-41 on a 9-0 run.
Sunday November 22, 2009 2:47
2:50
Karel stays with it and its a 3-point ball game, 50-47 at the second media timeout with 11:07 left.
Sunday November 22, 2009 2:50

Wisconsin is getting nice contributions from a variety of reserves including Taylor Wurtz with 4 points, Jade Davis with 3 points, Jamie Russell with 7 points. Alyssa Karel leads all scores with 10 points and has added four assists and four steals.
Sunday November 22, 2009 2:53
2:55
CSu beat us back on the fast break and has regained a five-point advantage. They are a very nice team with balance and quickness. Zastrow hist from the low post to make it a 3-point game again 52-49.
Sunday November 22, 2009 2:55
2:59
UW had a season low 7 turnovers at UW-Milwaukee last week. That is certainly something they work on all the time....elminating those errors. Today UW has 13 and CSU has 14. It's been a hard-fought defensive game with lots of active hands. Taylor Wurtz is shooting as we come out of the timeout making it a four-point game with CSU leading 54-50
Sunday November 22, 2009 2:59

Rae Rae for 3!. UW is within one. The crowd is loud.
Sunday November 22, 2009 3:00
3:04
Kailey Klein, who has 19 points for CSU, picked up her fourth foul and has to sit. Teah Gant made both free throws and we are hanging around. a 3 pointer by CSU gives them the 61-55 edge as we hit the third media timeout (7:15 left).

Karel makes two freebies and UW is within 61-57. . Rae Rae intercepts a pass and Taylor Wurtz and Karel convert on a classic fast break to come within two. A game this close might come down to free throws. UW is 8-10 for 80 percent so far. CSU is 12-18 for 66.7 percent.

CSU 63 UW 59 5:57 LEFT

Sunday November 22, 2009 3:07

Lin spells Tara. Taylor Wurtz lets a 3-pointer fly. Lin gets the rebound and is fouled. Makes one of two. It's a 6 point game, 66-60 with 4:44 left.

Sunday November 22, 2009 3:09
3:11

It's all upperclassman on the floor with Zastrow, and Karel as juniors, Teah and Rae Lin as seniors....and freshman Taylor Wurtz. Teah misses one of two free throws making it 66-61 with 4:06 left.

Sunday November 22, 2009 3:11

Sunday November 22, 2009 3:16
3:18
Wurtz waltzes through the lane and hits with 1:25 left to give UW its first lead since 14:19 of the first half. CSU misses and Lin gets the rebound. time out CSU with UW leading 69-68 and with the ball and 1:09 left.
Sunday November 22, 2009 3:18
3:20
The Badger formula has been to drive or hit a jumper and have Lin on the low post to collect the rebound. Has worked pretty well as Karel just missed and Lin gathered it up. Wurtz got a little too zealous on her drive and was called for the offensive foul. CSU has the ball with 36 ticks left down 1.
Sunday November 22, 2009 3:20
3:21

CSU misses and Wurtz gets the rebound and is fouled by Klein who fouls out. CSU calls timeout to ice Wurtz at the line. 16.5 seconds left.

Sunday November 22, 2009 3:21

Freshman Taylor Wurtz is at the line with the game in her hands. Badgers lead 69-68 with 16.5 left. How many times do you think she dreamed of this moment growing up to be a Badger?
Sunday November 22, 2009 3:22

CSU gets two pretty good shots off but time runs out. One CSU player still on the ground it despair. Kate Peterson is in disbelief. Hard fought game all around as UW goes to 3-0 on the season and Cleveland State falls to 1-3.
