Student Athlete Computer Labs
History of the Fetzer Centers
Thanks in large part to the generosity of UW Alumnus Wade Fetzer (BS'59) and his
wife Beverly, student-athletes at the University of Wisconsin have access to two
exceptional academic centers.
The original Fetzer Student Athlete Academic Center opened in the basement of the
McClain Center in 1997 and housed a 15,000 square foot facility that served the
needs of all student athletes. In the fall of 2006, the Kohl Fetzer Center (KFC)
opened as a satellite office. This 5,000 square foot learning center provides a
quiet study environment, an eleven station computer lab, and advising and learning
specialist support to teams that are proximate to the Kohl Center.
In the summer of 2012, renovation of the McClain Center began, and the Fetzer Center
was relocated to the lower level of Kellner Hall. The current facility houses the
majority of the Academic and Student Development staff, a thirteen station computer
lab, and multiple quiet study areas. During the transition, Tutoring and Study Table
are offered in the Varsity Club, located in Camp Randall Stadium.
A new Fetzer Center will be opening on the north end of Camp Randall in January,
2014 as part of the Student-Athlete Performance
Center project. The new state of the art facility will be double the size
or the original Fetzer Center, and will provide an exceptional space to facilitate
learning and student-athlete development.

Advisors
Advisors provide a broad range of services to student athletes:
- academic advising and counseling
- monitor academic performance
- monitor eligibility
- monitor post competition

- meet and communicate regularly with coaches and administrators, monitor class attendance
- contact UW faculty and staff to gather information on the performance of students
- meet with prospective student-athletes and families on recruiting visits

Learning Specialists
Learning specialists coordinate and implement academic support plans for students
who are potentially at risk or under prepared.
They foster academic skills by assisting students with developing a mastery of the
subject material, developing study strategies, test taking skills, organizational
skills and time management approaches.
Students are assigned to learning specialists and meet with them regularly. As a
team, the student-athlete, learning specialist, and advisor work together to design
a plan to help the student acquire the necessary skills to succeed academically,
increase academic confidence and accomplish academic goals.

Mentors
Students who are potentially at-risk or under-prepared but do not need the assistance
of a learning specialist are provided with mentors.
Mentors assist student-athletes in
- developing effective study skills
- learning time management strategies and organization skills
- transitioning from high school into college
Mentors are often former student-athletes, graduate students, and/or individuals
who are professionally employed. They meet with assigned students weekly in one
or two hour sessions.

Tutors
Student athletes can request individual tutors for any course, as well as participate
in organized study groups. Tutors are mainly professionals and graduate students
with a high degree of expertise and experience.
Student-athletes request tutors through their myuwbadgers.com portal.

Fetzer Center Computer Labs
The computer labs at the Kellner and Kohl Fetzer Centers are open exclusively to
UW student-athletes. In order to use the labs, you will need to set up a network
account. Please see the Computer Lab Coordinator (or your advisor) for more information.
Appropriate Use
As students at the University of Wisconsin, you are expected to abide by the UW's
policies for
Appropriate Use Of Information Technology Resources. In addition, the viewing
of objectionable materials is not allowed in the computer lab, unless it is specifically
assigned as part of your coursework.
Food & Beverages
Food and beverages rules for the computer lab are as follows:
- Closed beverage containers (i.e. water bottles, etc.) are allowed.
- Open beverage containers (i.e. paper cups, coffee cups, etc.) are not allowed.
- Food is not allowed.
Violating these rules may affect your lab access. If you cause any damage to the
computers due to spilled food or beverages, you may be charged for repair or replacement.
Home Directories
All lab accounts include network space for the storage of files (i.e. a home directory).
Due to space limitations on the server, excessive use of your home directory to
store personal files may result in restrictions being place on your home directory.
If you have a large number of files that are not related to academic work, you should
copy them to portable storage such as a rewritable CD/DVD or a USB drive.
Laptop Computers
The Kohl Fetzer Center has a limited number of laptop computers available for short-term
check out to student-athletes.
Noise
The computer labs are quiet study areas. Excessive noise is not tolerated. Please
keep talking and conversation to a minimum.
Printing
Due to NCAA Compliance Regulations, we must charge for printing. However, all of
your printing needs are funded through the Student-Athlete Opportunity Fund. Black
& white printing is available from your workstation; color printing must be requested
through the computer lab staff.
Other Computer Labs
The UW-Madison campus provides
general-access computer labs at 17 locations. Use of the labs is free (except
for printing with Wiscard) for anyone with a valid UW-Madison ID. Applications are
available for both Macintosh and Windows on dual-boot iMac computers. Hardware includes
DVD/CD-RW drives, scanners, video editing resources, color printers, and poster
printers. Not all hardware and software are available in every lab. Please contact
individual labs for specific information.
